Macas is a small town, capital of Morona Santiago, Ecuador. It is known as the "Emerald of the East" due to its location east of the Andes mountains. Macas lies in the Upano Valley overlooking the Upano River. About the altitude, Macas has an elevation of 3,445 feet (1,050 meters) above sea level.
Macas is a place where tourists can mingle with an indigenous family or community for a few days. Macas is also a place to start a jungle trekking, and to learn or practice rafting. Sangay National Park is another attraction that attracts visitors because it has three active volcanoes inside its territory. Rafting on the Upano river is another activity offered in the city of Macas.
