Cañar province

Cañar is an Ecuadorian province rich in cultural traditions. Its capital is Azogues. Cañar is the ancestral home of the indigenous Cañari people — hence its name — Cañaris have lived in this region of Ecuador for many years. This province also has interesting indigenous markets and lakes. Besides Azogues another popular destination is Biblián, due to La Virgen del Rocío church. Another popular attraction is the Cañari-Incan Ruins of Ingapirca.

Cañar exports a lot of Panama hats and is the producer of Zhumir, a local alcoholic drink. Examples of traditional food is a guinea pig with potatoes, fried pork, roast chicken, and crunchy pig skin.

The climate is cool in the interior of the province, tropical in the lower parts, and chili in the high plateaus. The temperature varies between 42°F to 73°F (5°C to 23°C). February is the hottest month of the year. April is the rainiest month, and July is the coldest month of the year.

Cañar mayor local holidays are Cantonization of Azogues on April 16 and Independence of Azogues on November 4.
