Labor Day is the International Workers' Day. Known locally as "Día del Trabajo" or "Primero de Mayo". Labor Day is always celebrated on May 1st and it is an Ecuadorian national holiday. It is associated with the start of spring as well as the celebration of workers. On Labor Day most business, shops, and schools close. Usually, Ecuadorians spend the day relaxing with their family and friends. They also do some local tourism visiting parks, squares or museums.
There are no parades or special demonstrations during Labor Day. Unless local union members or workers got involved some kind of protest. In that case, they march in front of a government building to express their point of view.
Ecuador celebrates the International workers day to recognize those who have fought for their respectable working rights. Ecuador's labor laws require that employers provide this day off. If Labor Day falls in the middle of the week, the Ecuadorian government changes the date to fall on a Monday or Friday to allow for an extended weekend.
