San Cristóbal de Patate or just “Patate” is part of the Llanganates National Park in the Tungurahua province, Ecuador. This is 25 minutes from Ambato and two and a half hours south of Quito. Patate has become a popular destination for volcano-watchers. This city has great views of the Tungurahua volcano - which is constantly in volcanic activity.
Patate is known as the "Valley of Eternal Spring". This town is a beautiful place located in the central area of the Andes Mountain. Nearby are the waterfalls of Mundug and Las Golondrinas; as well as the lagoons of San Borja, Cocha Negra, and Sudahua. In addition, Patate has several cultural attractions such as the religious and archaeological museum of the Lord of the Earthquake, and its sanctuary. For those who love hiking, there is a steep stairway known as "La Escalinata" - Its access is easy and the walk lasts about 30 minutes.
Among the local festivals there is the Lord of the Earthquake Festivity which takes place in early February each year. The town celebrates with parades and folk dances to give thanks to their patron saint.
