Tungurahua is an active volcano with an elevation of 16,475 ft. (5,023 m.) above sea level. It is an impressive symmetric volcano, but its summit is usually under clouds. Located in the Tungurahua province of Ecuador. It is part of the Sangay National Park. Also, considered one of South America's most active volcanoes. No doubt why Tungurahua means "throat of fire" in Quechua. This volcano constantly emits gas and vapor.
This volcano is 85 mi. (135 km.) SouthEast of Quito. Closest towns are Baños de Agua Santa, Puela, and Penipe. Many tourists are also interested in the nearby volcanoes of Chimborazo and El Altar. All of them part of the "Avenue of Volcanoes".
Approximately 20,000 people live in the area below the Tungurahua volcano. Since 2000, a new lava dome has been growing in its summit crater.
