Sangay Volcano

Sangay is the most active volcano in Ecuador with a peak elevation of 17,017 ft. (5,188 m.) height above the sea level. In fact, it is one of the highest active volcanoes in the world. Located in the Morona Santiago province — 75 mi. (112 km.) Northeast of Cuenca and 136 mi. (200 km.) South of Quito — It is part of the Sangay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Sangay volcano has perfect steep cone shape and glacier-covered top. But, it is remote and inaccessible. It has frequent eruptions. As a result of the volcanic activity, there are no inhabitants around the volcano. Climbing and approaching the summit is dangerous, but is doable. This is because of the need to dodge the stones and material ejected from the crater.

Sangay volcano has two refuges or shelters "Guargalland" and "Plazapampa." Camping is allowed but no hunting. To access the National Park there is a 10$ entrance fee.

The climate around the volcano is tropical. The less humid months are from November to February. While the wettest are July and August.
