Limoncocha Biological Reserve

Limoncocha Biological Reserve is located in the Sucumbios province, Ecuador. This is about 229 miles east from Quito. The reserve has an area of 11,399 acres (​​4,613 hectares). One of its most important natural beauties is the Limoncocha lagoon, although, the main attraction of the Limoncocha Biological Reserve is its wildlife. Some common species found are the night monkey, howler monkey, hawk, coyote, mountain quail, jaguar, among others. Limoncocha Biological Reserve contains a large amount of grass on its banks that are the preferred habitat for amphibians and reptiles such as black caimans, and motelo turtles. In addition, the reserve homes more than 350 species of birds, as well as a number of rather unique trees like cedars, giant ceibo, laurel, balsa, and pambil.

To visit the reserve Limoncocha from Quito, travel to Lago Agrio (162 mi - 260 km), by bus tickets cost $10 to $12. From Lago Agrio, take route Lago Agrio-Shushufindi-Pompeya. On kilometer 31 of this road, after the town of Shushufindi, you'll find the entrance. If going from Quito to Coca/Francisco de Orellana (180 mi - 290 km), take a bus to Coca  ($10-$12). From Coca, must travel by boat ($10) down the Napo River. Pass the kichwa community of Pompeya until Limoncocha (3 hours).
