San Rafael waterfall, in the Coca River, is one of the largest waterfalls in the eastern part of Ecuador. This waterfall has a fall of more than 492 ft. (150 m.). Indeed, San Rafael is a spectacular waterfall, worth the visit. The entry to the San Rafael waterfall is in the limit of Napo and Succumbios, in the road Quito-New Loja. About 3 1/2 hours drive from Quito. The park entrance is on the main road. From the entrance, it is about half an hour walking through the cloud forest. Along the way to the waterfall, you can appreciate the rich flora that characterizes the Ecuadorian Amazon. For sure you will see a lot of butterflies and flowers. You may also take a bath in small cascades of crystal clear water, found on the way to the San Rafael waterfall. There is an observation station where you can see a panoramic view of the San Rafael waterfall.
The entrance is free. About things you need, make sure to bring comfortable clothing, walking shoes, hat, sunscreen, and insect repellent. There are restrooms on-site but there are no stores inside this protected area. So, bring water and some snacks. Busses pass by the main road every hour. The best time to visit is during the dry season from June to November.
