Santay Island (Isla Santay in Spanish) is a recreation area located between the cities of Guayaquil and Duran, in the Guayas river. Guayaquil and the Santay Island are connected through a pedestrian bridge of 840 meters (2,755ft). The bridge has an elevated part that permits the navigation of the vessels crossing the river. In addition, there is a second bridge of 670m. (2.200ft), that connects the island to Durán. On this path, tourists enjoy a river view of Guayaquil, including Santa Ana hill. The Island is home to 85 bird species. As well as, it is the habitat of some endangered species such as the river crocodile and the "machacón" duck.
Santay Island is a conservation area. In addition, of being a vehicle-free place. Only pedestrians or bicycles can access to the island. Once on the island, there is a 1.2 mile path to an eco-village. Wearing comfortable clothes, using sun protection and, above all, being predisposed to respect nature, are the main recommendations when visiting Santay Island. Admission is free.
