Pasochoa Wildlife Refuge

The Pasochoa Wildlife Refuge is located 45 minutes from Quito, Ecuador. Pasochoa protects a unique forest around an extinct volcanic crater. In fact, the last time the Pasochoa volcano erupted was more than 100,000 years ago, transforming the volcanic cone into a collapsed crater with a semicircular shape. The Pasochoa Wildlife Refuge has several trails through the park. It also has approximately 240 species of plants, as well as more than 120 species of birds such as hummingbirds, Andean condors, seedbeds, among others.

Among the activities carried out here is the climbing of the Pasachoa volcano, the hiking on the trails, the night in a camping site and do not forget to watch birds. There is a viewpoint known as "El Mirador" where you can enjoy the view. The refuge has small cabins with capacity for 20 people and a camping area with a capacity for 30 tents and bathrooms for the area. A taxi from the old town of Quito costs about $ 5. By bus, it is an hour's journey. Go to the Marin bus station and take a bus to Amaguaña $ 0.45. From there we rented a truck to the shelter $ 6 each way. The entrance fee is $ 3 for locals and $ 10 for foreigners.

If driving from Quito, take the road to the Los Chillos valley and continue along the road to San Rafael-Amaguaña. Pass Amaguaña and in the community of El Ejido de Amaguaña (1 km), turn left and then right along the cobbled stone path next to the Church of the Commune. Continue for 6 kilometers; Pass the community of San Pedro de Pilopata until you reach the parking area of the shelter.
