El Angel Ecological Reserve is a unique area in the Carchi province of Ecuador. In the border with Colombia. The closest city is Tulcan. About 3 hours from Quito. This reserve protects the ancient Polylepis forest — It is worth visiting — El Angel Ecological Reserve has an altitude between 10,499 to 13,780 ft. (3,200 to 4,200 m.) The main attraction is the espeletia plants (frailejones) that can grow up to 26 ft. (8 m.) tall. Other attractions are the lakes El Voladero and Verdes. It also has a lookout point or mirador. Popular activities are hiking, walking and fishing.
El Angel is rich in flora such as passion flowers, yellow and orange orchids. Also, home many birds including dotted ducks, and condors. Examples of wildlife are the Andean foxes, deers, pumas, and wild rabbits. The best time to visit is in the dry season, from June to October. The climate is chilly. The average temperature is 50° F (10° C).
From Quito, take Panamericana Norte E35 to Ibarra. Then take the road 187 North to El Angel town. On the other hand, if you are at Tulcan take the road E182 West to Tufiño town. In any case, the road to the main entrance is well signed but not asphalted.
