Baltra Island — "Isla Baltra" in Spanish — is a small flat island near the center of the Galápagos Islands. But, it is not part of the Galápagos National Park. Although, this island provides habitat for several species of birds. From noddy terns to large brown pelicans and black frigates. As well as it is home of land iguanas and Galápagos finches.
Baltra Island is usually the first place where tourists set foot when visiting the Galápagos Islands. It has the highest capacity airport in the Galápagos Islands. This is Seymour Airport, known as Galápagos Ecological Airport because it operates saving energy. It also uses green technologies such as solar, wind power and seawater desalination. Seymour Airport is the busiest airport in the Galápagos Islands. It has a few stores and some restaurants.
Baltra is usually the starting point for taking a cruise or visiting Santa Cruz island. Transportation is available at the airport. Once visitors arrive at Baltra, they pass through the National Park queue. There is a $100 park entrance fee for international tourists and $25 for locals.
A must thing to do in Baltra is visiting North Seymour. A small island where you can see marine iguanas, and sea lions. As well as frigate birds, blue-footed boobies, swallow-tailed gulls. Indeed, a bird lover's dream, located about 30 minutes from Baltra Island. You can reach North Seymour taking a boat trip.
