El Altar volcano – Crater lake

El Altar is an extinct volcano on Sangay National Park. 170 km south of Quito, near Riobamba. It has nine peaks surrounding a beautiful glacial crater lake. Surrounding the crater, there are green valleys full of waterfalls and multi-coloured glacial lagoons.

Tulcán

Tulcán is the capital of the Carchi province. This city is situated north of Ecuador, near the border with Colombia. It lies 3000 meters above sea level. Tulcán main attractions are the Topiary Garden Cemetery and El Angel Ecological Reserve.  About the altitude, Tulcán has an elevation of ‎9,780 feet (2,980 meters) above sea level.

Another tourist attraction of Tulcán is the Rumichaca Bridge, over the Carchi River. This bridge is the principal highway passage between Colombia and Ecuador. Some visitors cross to Colombia to visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Flagstones — "Sanctuario de Nuestra Señora de Las Lajas" in Spanish.

A local holiday is the Independence of Tulcán on November 19.
