Mojanda lakes are three turquoise lagoons nestled in the Andes Highlands. They are amongst once-active volcanoes. Located in the Imbabura province, near Otavalo. "Lagunas de Mojanda" in Spanish. It has an altitude of 13,983 ft. (4,263 m) The complex has three lakes Caricocha, Huarmicocha, and Yanacocha. Connected by the surrounded by mountains of Fuya-Fuya and Yanahurco.
Mojanda lakes are accessible only by car. From Otavalo, it is a 35-minute ride. A taxi or truck charges between $20 both ways. Besides, make sure to arrange your return in advance. There is no transportation in the lakes. Neither there is a phone signal. There is another entrance by the Tabacundo town. The road is less trodden, but transportation is more expensive. The entrance is free, but camping is not allowed.
Due to the altitude and the open paramo, the climate is cold. The average temperature is 46°F (8°C). Bring a jacket, walking shoes, and sunglasses. As well as drinking water and some snacks. The best time to visit is in the morning.
