Peguche waterfall is one of the main attractions in Otavalo and its surroundings. Located 1.86 mi. (3 km.) North of Otavalo and 14 mi. (23 km.) South of Ibarra. "Cascadas de Pequche" in Spanish. It is a beautiful waterfall of 59 ft. (18 m.) in height and 20 ft. (6 m.) wide. The area around the waterfall has a very picturesque and peaceful atmosphere. Formed by the river of the same name, which starts at Lake San Pablo. Peguche waterfall is within the 40 acres of the Protected Forest of Peguche Waterfall.
A few days before the Inti Raymi, indigenous people get prepare with a spiritual ritual. They come to the Peguche waterfall to take a bath. After the ritual, they performed a traditional dance. Inti Raymi is the sun and harvest celebration held on June 21st.
To get there from Otavalo, it takes about 5 minutes by car, a taxi cost $2,00 one way. Public transportation is available at the Simon Bolivar central park. Also, if you prefer walking, it takes around 30 minutes. Admission has no cost (free entrance). Once in the forest, there is a cobblestone path that will lead you to the waterfall. Remember to wear fresh clothing, a hat, walking shoes, and bug repellant.
