Cotopaxi National Park is located between the Cotopaxi, Napo, and Pichincha provinces. This is about 55km (37 miles) south of Quito and a few miles north of Latacunga. Cotopaxi National Park has 33,393 hectares (82,516 acres). It is one of the most visited attractions in Ecuador. The main point of interest is the Cotopaxi volcano, the highest active volcano in South America with an elevation of 19,347 feet (5,897 m). The reserve offers many attractions for nature lovers. Indeed, it is the perfect place for hiking, biking, trekking, and more. In addition, there is a museum located at the park entrance that is worth the visit, located closest to the El Chasqui entrance. Beyond the museum to the north lies Laguna de Limpiopungo, a small, high-mountain lake with a pretty campsite beside it.
Buses between Quito's southern Quitumbe terminal and Latacunga can drop you off in Machachi (closest city). There are two main entrances to the park. By far, most visitors use the main, southern entrance, also known as El Chasqui. The bus also stops at the park entrance. Public buses are not allowed inside the park. The parking lot to climb volcano is about half an hour drive from the highway, where buses let passengers off. To access the reserve you may rent a car or go on a private tour. If taking a taxi, hire them for a round trip ($20-$30).
