Cotopaxi volcano is the best-known active volcano of Ecuador. Also, one of the most famous in South America. Located in the Cotopaxi province, about 31 mi. (50 km.) South of Quito and 22 mi. (35 km.) Northeast of Latacunga. Cotopaxi is the second-highest volcano in Ecuador, with a height of 19,347 ft. (5,897 m.) above sea level. It has a symmetrical cone. Its crater consists of two concentric crater rims. The Jose Rivas Refuge, known as Cotopaxi's "base camp," is located at 15,760 ft. (4,810 m.) If you want to climb to the peak in the morning, the refuge has bunk beds for an overnight stay, although must make a reservation in advance. For an additional price, they serve meals as well.
Cotopaxi is one of the most prominent volcanoes that line in the "Avenue of Volcanoes." Part of the chain of volcanoes around the Pacific plate known as the Pacific Ring of Fire. Ecuador requires a guide to climb this volcano. This experience is a real must. The views are breathtaking.
The climate around this area is glacial. Furthermore, due to the altitude, the weather can change quickly. You need warm clothing, hiking boots, a hat, and a raincoat in case it snows or rain.
