Chimborazo volcano

Chimborazo volcano is the highest mountain in Ecuador. It is an extinct volcano with a peak elevation of 20,564 ft. (6,268 m.) height above the sea level. Chimborazo volcano is the farthest point from the center of the earth. Although, its elevation is 2547 meters smaller than Everest. This is because the Earth is widest at its equator. In fact, Chimborazo is one degree south of the equator. The massive ice-capped stratovolcano is located in the Chimborazo Fauna Reserve. Where visitors may see animals such as alpacas, vicuñas, and llamas. Also, Chimborazo volcano is part of the "Avenue of Volcanoes". "Avenida de Los Volcanes" in Spanish. Besides climbing, other activities are trekking, and hiking, and exploring the nearby towns.

Chimborazo volcano is 125 mi (201 km) SW of Quito, Ecuador's capital, and 17 mi. (28 km. NW) of Riobamba — the closest city. It attracts thousands of visitors every year. Climbing the Chimborazo volcano takes around 10 hours and four hours of return. There are two refuges on the mountain, Carrel refuge at 15,744 ft. (4,800 m.) and Whymper refuge at 5,000 m (16,400 ft.) Vehicles can access up to the first refuge. You need to place a reservation if you want to stay at any of the refuges. In particular, don't forget to bring plenty of water and warm clothing.
