Mount Carihuairazo is a volcanic caldera, in a beautiful snow-topped mountain. Located inside the Chimborazo Fauna Reserve. Close to the Chimborazo volcano — Ecuador's highest mountain. The nearest city is Riobamba, about 19 mi. (30 km.) Southwest. This is 93 mi. (150 km) Southwest of Quito. Mount Carihuairazo is an inactive volcano, part of the "Avenue of Volcanoes". "Avenida de Los Volcanes" in Spanish. But, it was an active one in the past. Ancient eruptions destroyed its peak and left behind a caldera. It has an altitude of 16,463 ft. (5,018 m.) above sea level. It has also a refuge or shelter situated at 4,200 m. (13,776 ft.) There are two main peaks at this mountain. The central Maxim is the highest, while the lower is Mocha.
Climbing the Carihuairazo Volcano is often used as practice. This is before climbing other higher summits such as the Chimborazo or the Cotopaxi. It will also help you with acclimatization.
