Laguna Amarilla - Lagoon

Laguna Amarilla is a crater-lagoon at the base of El Altar volcano, in Ecuador. El Altar has an elevation of 17,451 ft. (5,319 m.) and it is part of the Sangay National Park. The volcano has nine snow-covered peaks, in the middle of them, it is the lagoon that has a horseshoe or C shape. Although Laguna Amarilla means yellow lagoon, its water has a beautiful turquoise color. The rainwater accumulated in the crater formed Laguna Amarilla. Also from the chunks of ice that drop into the lake from the volcano peaks.

Known as Laguna Collanes. Since the water that comes from the lagoon forms the Collanes river. The surrounding area gives live to the Collanes valley. The valley has a beautiful landscape, and it is rich in flora, and fauna. Some popular activities include walking, trecking, fishing, bird watching, and camping.

Laguna Amarilla is near the Refuge Collanes. From the refuge, you can see a valley with El Altar as background. Staying overnight at the refuge cost $12, but must register in the nearby hacienda. The road may be very muddy, you need muddy boots. Besides thermal clothing and a waterproof jacket.
