Cuicocha crater lake

Cuicocha is a caldera nestled within the crater of the Cotacachi volcano. It has an elevation of 10,649 ft. (3,246 m.) Located in the Imbabura province, in Ecuador. "Laguna Cuicocha" in Spanish is a 2 mi. (3 km.) crater lake. At the center of the lake sits two small islands. The lake is part of the Cotacachi-Cayapas Ecological Reserve.

The area surrounding the Cuicocha lake is great for hiking and for birding. In fact, the view of the surrounding area is incredible. You will need to wear fresh clothing, hiking gear, comfortable shoes. Although, in the "mirador" lookout point, there is a restaurant and bathrooms. Bring some snacks and water.

The closest town is Cotacachi. Still, a long way to access the reserve. You can go in a private car, bus or taxi for $10 one way. Make arrangements to pick you up. There may be no transportation available to return. Admission is free. Boat rides are available for $4 person.
